Is the Stock Market Open on Veterans Day?

Updated January 10, 2025

Veterans Day, observed annually on November 11th, is a federal holiday in the United States dedicated to honoring military veterans. Despite its federal status, both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ remain open for trading on Veterans Day, ensuring that regular stock market activities continue uninterrupted.

However, it's important to note that while equity markets remain open, the bond market observes Veterans Day as a holiday and closes on this day.

Bond markets typically follow SIFMA-recommended holidays. Their recommendation is that US, UK, and Japanese markets close for Veterans Day in the US.

Additionally, Veterans Day (like Columbus Day) is considered a non-settlement date for stock trades. This means that although trading occurs, the settlement of transactions does not take place on this day due to the closure of many banking institutions. As a result, trades executed on the preceding business day (typically November 10th) will have their settlement date pushed to the following business day (usually November 12th).
