Is the Stock Market Open on Columbus Day?
Updated January 10, 2025
Columbus Day, observed on the second Monday of October, is a federal holiday in the United States. Despite its federal status, both the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ remain open for trading on Columbus Day. This means that while federal offices and some institutions may be closed, regular stock market activities continue uninterrupted.
SIFMA also recommends that markets in the US and UK following its guidance close on Columbus Day. However, SIFMA does not recommend closure in Japan.
It's important to note that while equity markets operate as usual, the bond market observes Columbus Day as a holiday and is closed on this day. Columbus Day, like Veterans Day, is also a non-settlement date.
